CLEVELAND -- Coast Guard crews rescued a 24-year-old man who became stranded in Deer Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area near Oswego, New York, Wednesday night.

Around 7 p.m., an Oswego County emergency dispatcher notified a watchstander at Coast Guard Station Oswego of a man who became stranded in Deer Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area after he become disoriented while checking his muskrat traps.

Rescuers from the Pulaski, New York, Fire Department arrived on scene first but did not have a portable boat which would allow them to safely cross a deep icy stream to rescue the man.

A rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Oswego drove a truck as close as possible to the trapper's location then used a Coast Guard inflatable rescue craft to cross the icy stream along with two members of the Pulaski Fire Department aboard .

Once rescuers got the man across the stream and to a safe location, he was evaluated by EMTs and released.

"Search and rescue missions always stand the best chance of success when partners work together," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Trevor Shiel, Station Oswego's officer-of-the-day.

The man was wearing waders and winter clothing.

The air temperature was 25 degrees with blowing snow.
